Bold, authentic, and endlessly creative, these are just a few of the words that come to mind when describing Jay Jeffers.

Jay Jeffers, founder of JayJeffers Inc., has officially been named this year’s Designer 360° winner! This annual recognition honors a designer whose career reflects excellence across design, business, leadership, and community impact, and Jeffers is a standout example of all four.

Each year, candidates are peer-nominated and carefully selected by the DSA board, with the award celebrating those whose influence extends far beyond beautiful interiors.

“A true 360° designer is one whose impact goes beyond beautiful spaces—through leadership, innovation, and a well-rounded career that helps shape the future of design,” said Haley Hinson Ishmael, host, during the announcement.

Few designers embody that definition quite like Jay Jeffers.

Over the past two decades, he has built a multifaceted career spanning residential interiors, hospitality, product design, publishing, and entrepreneurship. What began as a San Francisco-based firm in 1999 has grown into an internationally recognized studio known for its layered, deeply personal approach to design.

“I’m constantly on the go,” Jeffers shares. “But to me, it just feels like everyday life. This is what I do.”

Discovering Design

Interestingly, design wasn’t always the plan.

Growing up in Texas, Jeffers attended the University of Texas at Austin, initially pursuing a business degree. While studying marketing and advertising, he quickly realized he was drawn more to the creative side of the industry.

After relocating to San Francisco and working in advertising and public relations at Gap’s corporate headquarters, that pull toward creativity only grew stronger.

His breakthrough came unexpectedly.

While decorating his first apartment, on a tight budget, no less, Jeffers found himself sewing curtains and crafting makeshift Roman shades. That experience led him to enroll in an introductory interior design course.

“It was like a light bulb,” he recalls. “It was the first time in my life that I could see myself doing something and making a living at it—and being happy doing it.”

That realization set his career in motion.

He apprenticed under an established designer for four years, gaining hands-on experience before launching his own firm at just 31, laying the groundwork for what would become a globally respected brand.

Designing Authentic Homes

From the very beginning, Jeffers has stayed grounded in one core belief: a home should reflect the people who live in it.

“I’ve always wanted a home to feel authentic,” he says. “I want it to feel like it’s been collected over time—not like you’re living in a museum.”

That philosophy has guided his work for more than 25 years.

Whether it’s a family residence, a city apartment, or a weekend retreat, Jeffers thoughtfully layers vintage pieces, antiques, contemporary furnishings, and art to create spaces that feel lived-in and personal.

Even when designing an entire home from scratch, a common client request, he focuses on creating the illusion of a collected space.

“It’s a lot harder to make something feel like it evolved over time when you’re doing it all at once,” he says. “But it’s also a lot of fun.”

Balancing Bold Ideas with Client Trust

Jeffers is widely known for his confident use of color, pattern, and texture, but his approach is never one-size-fits-all.

“I think one of my strengths is understanding my clients and how they think,” he explains. “Some are interested in taking risks, and some aren’t.”

Rather than pushing bold ideas, he introduces them thoughtfully, perhaps through a powder room wallpaper or an unexpected accent, while always giving clients options that allow them to feel comfortable and confident.

“There’s not one right answer in design,” he says. “There might be seven right answers. So, sometimes they don’t choose the risky option, and that’s okay too.”

Expanding Beyond Interiors

While Jeffers built his name in residential design, his work has expanded far beyond it.

His portfolio now includes hospitality projects, product collaborations with brands like Arteriors and Accurate Lock & Hardware, and publishing. His upcoming book, Classic Modern, showcases 13 recent projects and reflects the evolution of his design perspective.

While earlier work established him as a master of color and pattern, this new collection reveals a more refined approach—one grounded in materials, architecture, and a deeper sense of place.

“I still love color and pattern,” he says. “But this book shows a deeper authenticity in the materials and the places where these homes exist.”

Building a Sustainable Design Business

Jeffers is equally passionate about the business side of design, something he believes many creatives overlook.

His advice to emerging designers? Understand the numbers behind your work.

“Know your finances. You have to know if the work you’re doing is profitable.”

He also emphasizes professionalism and relationships within the industry.

“Be a nice person. Pay your vendors on time. Treat your employees well,” he says. “You can’t do this alone.”

And one final piece of advice he shares often: documenting your work.

“Photograph everything,” he says. “You never know when a project will be gone—and you’ll wish you had captured it.”

A Career That Embodies 360° Design

Today, Jeffers continues to expand his firm, with offices in both San Francisco and New York, taking on projects that range from private residences to large-scale hospitality spaces, including The Madrona, a boutique hotel he has thoughtfully renovated and now operates.

Throughout his career, his passion for creative exploration and the human stories behind design has remained a constant.

For the Designer Society of America, Jeffers represents exactly what the Design 360° Award celebrates: a designer whose creativity, leadership, and business acumen shape not only beautiful interiors but the future of the industry.

And after more than two decades? He’s still enjoying every moment of it.

As he sits in his San Francisco home, reveling in his love for New York City, citing it as his selfish reason for opening an office there, he mindlessly pets his fabulous King Charles Spaniel and shares simply:

“It’s been a blast.”
