AI in Design, Episode 11: How AI Grew Up This Year

AI in Design: Episode 11 — How Far We’ve Come (And How Fast Things Are Changing!)

AI is having a wild year, and in this month’s AI in Interior Design episode, Jenna Gaidusek walks us through just how fast everything is changing. She kicks things off by revisiting her very first AI class, where Midjourney was brand new and the images were… a little wonky (to put it kindly). Even then, the potential was obvious: AI could help designers move faster and get visuals in front of clients sooner. Fast-forward to today, and those early tools already feel like antiques. Jenna has been documenting the evolution of AI on Instagram for two years, and watching the progression is nothing short of jaw-dropping.

One of the biggest takeaways? Most AI apps don’t last. Unless a tool is built by designers to solve real design problems, it usually fades out just as quickly as it shows up. Jenna shares how Visual Electric was once a go-to image tool for designers, but now platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity do it all—research, visuals, writing, browsing—under one roof. (Yes, Perplexity even acquired Visual Electric.) Many of the tools she recommended just a year ago no longer make the cut, simply because today’s all-in-one platforms are more powerful, more efficient, and more affordable.

She also dives into the rise of agentic AI—tools like Google’s Gemini that take meeting notes, organize inboxes, and tackle the admin tasks designers love to avoid. While some AI tools raise valid concerns for the industry, Jenna has also worked closely with developers and sees huge opportunities to build technology that truly supports designers. It’s fast-moving, a little chaotic, and incredibly exciting—and this episode captures exactly where AI stands right now, and where it’s headed next.
